DuroMax XP10000E Review

51VkUVQ2pGL_005We think conventional generators really become hard to beat in their upper wattage ranges – indeed, providing lots of electricity for a relative bargain is what makes them so good at supplying cheap emergency power in the first place. And among the better deals to be had in the 7000W+ category right now is the DuroMax XP10000E 8000 running watt / 10000 surge watt portable generator. To learn much more about this workhorse model and what we think about it, please keep reading our in-depth review.

Engine Displacement & Power Output

The DuroMax XP10000E is fitted with a 420cc, 16HP OHV engine that produces a total of 8,000 running watts and 10,000 surge watts. Besides generating lots of electricity, this is a very durable power plant that uses a cast iron cylinder sleeve and steel bearings for a longer engine life.

With this much power, the XP10000E can handle most of the highest-draw appliances in the home – in fact, many people report being able to power their entire home with this model. However, this may vary tremendously depending on the size of key appliances, like sumps, water heaters, etc.  To get a better idea of how far this wattage will get you, don’t forget to check out our Generator Sizing Calculator.  In any event, you will definitely want a manual transfer switch to properly harness all of this unit’s power.

DuroMax XP10000E3Runtime & Fuel Type

The XP10000E can run for approximately 10 hours on full, 8.3-gallon tank of regular unleaded gasoline. This is a very good runtime, a couple hours longer than most, and is partly attributable to this model’s impressive good fuel efficiency for a larger conventional generator.

Start Type

An electric start is included, in addition to the 12V battery needed to operate it. As a result, you can fortunately forget about having to hand-crank this little monster!

DuroMax XP10000E4Panel Outlets

This generator comes with a very good power panel, including:

  • (2) 120V, 20-amp, 3-prong;
  • (1) 120V, 30-amp twist-lock;
  • (1) 120/240V, 30-amp twist-lock;
  • (1) 120/240V, 50-amp heavy duty;
  • (1) 12V, 10-amp utility

Noise Level

With a noise rating of just 72dB, the XP10000E is quieter than most conventional generators that produce this much power.  In fact, this dB rating is more typical of generators in the 4000-6000 watt range in our experience. Such good noise reduction is in part due to the high-tech sound-deadening muffler that this model is equipped with.

DuroMax XP10000ESize & Portability

Notwithstanding its relatively quiet operation for its size – it’s still a very big generator, which measures 40 inches long by 29 inches wide by 40 inches deep. Further, it’s very heavy, 265 pounds to be exact. Just thank heavens it comes with a very solid wheel kit and no-flat tires!

Product Warranty

With only a one year (limited) warranty on parts, we are a bit disappointed, but not surprised, especially given how inexpensive this model is for its power output.

Price & Value

You definitely get your money’s worth with this model. Specifically, for its current sales price of $1,000, you get 8 running watts per dollar. This is clearly at the upper end of the range, which usually varies between 6 and 10 watts per dollar for conventional generators. DuroMax XP10000E Reviews & Ratings

ScreenHunter_11 May. 13 15.16Perhaps the most impressive thing about this model, apart from its great power, relatively quiet operation and good runtime, is its stellar satisfaction ratings. Currently, it has earned an average of 4.2 out of 5 stars across a total of 106 reviews, more than half of which (65) are a perfect 5-stars.

With this score, it’s clear that users love the XP10000E, but what exactly are they saying about it? Here are a some representative quotes from actual reviews that sum up the general sentiment:

  • “ I would recommend this generator to anyone looking for a great generator. ”
  • “ The packaging is outstanding, with absolutely NO dings or mars on any part of the unit. ”
  • “ I shopped prior to making this purchase and any other brand, for comparable features was from several hundred dollars more to over double the money. ”
  • “The unit provides plenty of power for an entire home, provided you’re not running any whole house heat pumps.”
  • “Generator is very quiet compared to a 8,000w I replaced. It is no louder then the 5,000w hondas I used to run.”

Of course, not all reviews were 5-star; however, from what we can tell, the lion’s share of the more negative reviews resulted from shipping damage or the odd product defect, rather than any problems associated with the unit’s overall performance.

DuroMax XP10000E2Concluding Thoughts & Opinions

The DuroMax XP10000E is a great example of why you’d want a conventional generator. This thing generates tons of electricity – enough to support an entire home in many cases; it’s fairly quiet for something that can muster 10,000 surge watts; it comes with a handy electric-start; it has a good 10-hour runtime that gives you plenty of rest between tank refills; it has all of the outlets you could ever need; and it provides a tremendous amount of electricity for your dollar.

Moreover, this is not some new model that hasn’t been tested – it has earned mainly 5-star reviews from many users who have confirmed that this generator met or far exceeded their expectations, especially for its very modest price tag.

Consequently, if you are looking for a large conventional portable generator that has the juice to light up and power many, if not all, of the necessary circuits in your home – but won’t cost you more than some models that put out far less wattage, the XP10000E is a very good choice. In fact, one of the few other models that bring a similar level of power, features and value is the Westinghouse WH7500E, which is also an excellent choice.
